A bipartisan parliamentary report, based on an inquiry to investigate the health and economic impact of menopause and perimenopause on Australian women, has revealed some shocking findings.
Notably, medical students at some Australian medical schools receive just an hour of menopause education over the entire course of their degrees.
The committee heard women seeking menopause care were often dismissed or offered ineffective treatments, including one woman who was told by her GP that all he learned in medical school was that menopausal women were either “mad or sad”.
Hopefully, this important report will be a catalyst for change in the understanding and treatment of menopause and perimenopause.
