Elder Abuse Screening instrument

With funding from the State Trustees Australia Foundation, the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) and health, aged care, and legal services co-designed the Australian Elder Abuse Screening Instrument (AuSI).

Pilot testing showed mixed results. The tool is still in development.

Data suggested that staff confidence in screening for elder abuse did improve because of using the tool, that the tool was straightforward to use, and helpful to frontline providers like nurses and other medical staff who do not routinely screen for elder abuse.

However, the pilot showed that the AuSI had no effect on the detection of elder abuse cases and no effect on staff knowledge of elder abuse, which was already high.
